One thing I enjoyed about Winter was heading out at night to shoot the city knowing it was relatively “safe” since all the junkies and criminal types are less likely to be outside. Especially along the waterfront where there are no nightclubs or homes.

I shot this photo of the city from the North Shore, very near the water ramp for Heinz Field. It had just snowed and mine where the only human prints in the snow (lower left in the photo). My tripod happened to be set up were the muskrats went in and out of the water so I wasn’t entirely alone…

I am a graphic artist and web desginer who has really gotten into digital photography. My Olympus D-380 is just not cutting it anymore and I have decided to purchase a digital SLR camera. This is a big purchase for me and I am very excited. I will most likely try to find something second hand and I am very new at this, I was hoping you could give me some suggestions of what I should be looking for.

Here are some of the things I want to do:

Mostly artistic photography to be printed and or used in graphic design.
I want to take pictures of the moon - control shutter speed manually would be nice
I want to be able to print decent quality 8x10 pics - what is the minimum MP required for this?
I want to take pictures of fire poi spinning - an option to use the flash right before the shutter closes on a long exposure is handy.
Good performance in low light applications
Quick refresh rate after turning on and taking pictures
Multiple shots with one push of the button
Price range of about $1000-1400 CDN

Any recommendations for lenses that a newbie should have to accomplish the above?
What about a good telephoto lens for a decent cost?

Any suggestions for good places online or in Victoria, BC for finding second hand equipment?

Thanks for all of you help,

But I cant always control the color of light and dealing with dichromatic coloured light. It is really a nightmare for my digital camera. So I hope you enjoy these shots.

For the new folks here, this has sort of morphed into a multipurpose night photo/ cd exchange tribe. If you're not into multitasking and don't want to participate in the music exchange, that's okay, but we'll be doing this again (I hope) and anyone's welcome to join it.

Dan made mine. It's totally out of the range of my normal musical M.O., which makes it even better - even Roots music gets stale every now and then.

Its a comp of five synth pop bands (DM, Erasure, Yazoo, Alison Moyet, the Assembly), all of whom are connected by this one guy (Vince Clarke). Dan included a full Ph.D. disertation about VC on the backside of the cover (and yes, I read it). Some of teh songs I've heard, some of it is totally new to me. Erasure I well remember rocking out to in junior high school, though there are some unfamiliar tracks here ("Solsbury Hill" for example.) Ditto Depesche Mode. Yazoo and Alison Moyet were unfamiliar. They're pretty mellow, synth pop a la the late eighties style. There are some particularly beautiful songs here - "Only You" is fabulous.
I can hear the thread through the album that comes from the influence of this one very prolific individual. My horizens have been duly broadened. This is living in my stereo right now and driving my significant other a bit crazy ("you're playing that AGAIN?").
The cover, by the way, is a graphic organization detailing Vince Clarke's involvement with all of the aforementioned projects. INTJ indeed!
If it's OK with our lovely moderator, I'd be happy to coordinate the first swap.

How this works:
1.) If you're in, you message me privately with your mailing address by January 5th.
2.) I message a random person with a different random person's address within a few days (by the 10th, probably) of getting the complete list of who's in.
3.) We all swap (in a timely manner, please), and then tell everyone in the tribe how fabulous the CD is.

For me, it's about hearing stuff I've never heard, hearing stuff I've not heard in a long time, hearing what other people are really grooving on.

For the kickoff, I'd like to propose a theme:
"Music to burn and dodge by"
What are you listening to in the dark right now?
What are you grooving to when you putter in photoshop?
